God is present everywhere in this world. Everything was created by God, the creation of
all the directions(Disha) is also God's blessing. Each direction has its own properties.
Accordingly, the south direction also has its own properties; where some may be
lucky/auspicious and some may be unlucky/inauspicious.
The universe has four major directions- East, West, North and South. Except these 4
directions there are also sub-directions. Usually, the South direction is considered to be
inauspicious. People avoid and fear purchasing south facing houses, shops,
warehouses, factories,etc. This fear has infiltrated people and most people believe that
this direction is extremely unfortunate.
What is the actual reason behind avoiding doors in the South for construction?
For construction in south-facing there are some rules of Vastu. However, the rules of
architecture and vastu are not suitable. Therefore, you may have to face some
difficulties while constructing.
- There are two alternative rules according to the setback in the south facing plot.
The construction of the main door in the Agni Kon(South- East) or Nairitya
Kon(South-West). In the opinion of vastu, the South-West door is not advisable,
this is the most inaccurate place. And when the door is situated here then the
map for the entire house gets distorted according to the principle of Vastu.
- In the opinion of science and vastu, south facing homes experience more impact
of ultraviolet rays. These can be fatal considering the health of the people living
in the house.
- The impact of sun rays stay for longer in the south facing direction, by which the
main South door heats up more. In situations like these, south facing doors are
not a benefactor for a hot state. These houses will have a greater impact of the
heat.
- One of the reasons for not constructing in south facing plots is that the discharge
of the water has to happen towards the main door, and in such homes the
majority of declination has to be towards south direction which is not in
accordance with Vastu.
- It is considered inauspicious to have a big balcony, or pergola, or porch or any
open space in the front of a south facing house. The elevation of such spaces in
this direction is also a challenge.
- For south facing, the borewells, septic tanks or underground water tanks are built
in the front for easy maintenance in future. But this is not considered good
according to Vastu.
- According to Vastu; as compared to South, the North direction should have more
open area and East should be more open than West. Which is not possible in
this direction.
- Always the south and west of the home should be higher and heavier whereas
the north and the east should be light and open.
- Rainwater harvesting can also not be built in the South facing front side of the
plot as in Agni Kon which is of the Agni tattva(Fire element) there should be no
water present. In the Prithvi tattva(Earth element) there should be no puddles or
holes or underground water source.And rainwater harvesting system is difficult to
build in the backside.
- If there is a higher building behind a south facing apartment then it is considered
inauspicious.
- If in a south facing home there is a park in front then too it is considered
inauspicious as the south should not be open.
- In front of a south facing building, if there is a deep drain that too is inauspicious
as puddles or drains are considered unlucky in the south direction.
- After dividing the south face in 9 parts, only one of them is considered auspicious
and that is called Vrihtath (the greatest). And the others are considered
inauspicious.
- To locate the main door in the south direction there are less options and therefore
we face difficulty in finalizing a map.
- .Whenever anyone builds their house, they want their drawing room right after the
front door, then the living room and kitchen and then in the end bedroom but with
south facing homes bedroom and kitchen come first according to vastu and the
drawing room at the extreme back of the house. Similarly this is difficult to
execute in smaller plots. However, the owner of the house does not want to take
their guest through their whole house to reach the drawing room. Because of
these reasons people avoid south facing houses.
- .People want their houses to look huge. To do this and make the house look
beautiful, they would have to place the rooms of the first floor at the back side to
highlight the depth of the house. So when this is done for south facing
apartments and we take the construction of rooms to the backside then the North
of the house gets higher and heavier, which is contradictory to vastu’s opinions of
keeping the North light and open.
What are the misconceptions behind avoiding doors in the south direction?
There are still a lot of misconceptions in people’s minds regarding the south. Because of
these people like to avoid south facing plots. Some of the misconceptions regarding the
south are:
It is believed that the South is dedicated to Lord Yama(The hindu god of death and
justice) and our forefathers. Thus the owner of the south is Lord Yama. From here
comes the misunderstanding that if Lord Yama is the lord of death then residing in the
South is not right. People get scared of death and let go of plots in this direction.
In our community there is another myth related to the south. During the mrityu
bhoj(death banquet) people face towards the South and have their meal. This is also
one of the reasons for people to avoid living in south facing plots.
Why is the south considered favorable?
In relation to the South the books of Vastu say that this direction provides with strength,
confidence and extreme wealth. If noticed carefully the most amount of wealth and
courage lies in the South.
People living in the South facing houses show more development in less time.

If the guardian of the house resides in the south direction then it is very good. Because
the south provides the chief of the house with courage and frequently opens new doors
of income for them.And if in this the chief of the family lives in the south side of the
house then they can control the whole family. Which will benefit the family. And
according vastu mantrashakti and sadhana done in the south side have special results.
- For the people in the business division the south direction is considered
auspicious. The corporate buildings situated in this direction have great success.
- In India at many posh locations there are roads with houses, shops, factories,
warehouses, offices, on both sides of the road. On one side there are south
facing properties and on the other side there are North facing properties. With
observation it has been known that, the expected success of the South facing
door is more than that of the North.
- The development in the south direction has a delayed time period. The
development of any country, village, or society will be the latest in this direction.
But they progress the most. If you know, South India, South America, South
Mumbai, South Delhi, South Kolkata, they all developed in the end but they are
the most progressive parts.
- South facing houses result in being fruitful for the first two generations but after
that the possibility of success for the third generation is non-existent. This is why
people of the third generation should avoid living in south facing houses
continuously as it is not fruitful.
- Usually the vastu for south facing apartments are generally okay. But the door
should not be south facing in the apartment and there should be no flaw in the
Eshaan Kon(North-East).
For whom is the South direction considered the most auspicious?
One may think after all this is that the south is inauspicious for everyone. But is it true?
No, this is absolutely false, because neither every direction is good for everyone nor is it
bad for everyone.
What is going to be fruitful for whom, is obtained according to their Kundali(horoscope).
There is a description in context of the South direction in Astrology. The south direction
is associated with Mangal grah(Mars) in kundali(horoscope). Because Mars represents
the Angni Tattva(Fire), therefore the South direction is the fire focused direction. So for
people in whose birth horoscope, Mangal(Mars) is considered auspicious and gives
good results for them the South direction will also give good results. The houses in
which the door is in South- West and in their horoscope South is beneficial, then in such
houses the Grah Swami showers them with boundless amounts of wealth is 8,12, and
24 years. But if after this the south-west house is not abandoned then the coming
generations may face problems in their household.
